The journeyman electrician exam isn't conceptually hard — it's a speed and code-navigation test. Most people who fail know the trade; they're just too slow finding answers in the NEC under a clock, or they fumble the calculations. The good news: both are trainable.

What the exam is really testing

The journeyman exam (usually administered by PSI, open-book against your state's adopted NEC edition) is less about whether you're a good electrician and more about whether you can:

  1. Find a rule in the code book in seconds. It's open-book, but the people who fail treat that as a safety net instead of a skill. If you're flipping for two minutes per question, you run out of time.
  2. Run the standard calculations cleanly — box fill, conduit fill, ampacity, voltage drop, dwelling loads. These are formula-and-table problems, not intuition.

Why first-timers fail

The most common reasons aren't knowledge gaps:

  • Time. They know the material but can't locate it fast enough.
  • An un-tabbed code book. Walking in without tabs is the single biggest avoidable mistake.
  • Calculation rust. They haven't done a box-fill or voltage-drop problem since school.
  • The wrong NEC edition. Studying 2020 when the state tests 2023, or vice versa. Check which edition your state uses first.

So how hard is it, really?

Pass rates vary by state and aren't always published, but the pattern is consistent: people who practice timed, code-navigation drills and the calculations pass comfortably; people who "know the trade" but walk in cold often don't. The exam rewards preparation in a very specific shape.

The fastest way to find out where you stand
