What to Expect on the Journeyman Electrician Exam (Format, Questions & Pass Score)
A plain-English breakdown of the journeyman electrician exam: how it's formatted, how many questions, what's tested, the passing score, and how it's scored.
If you're about to sit the journeyman electrician exam, the single biggest advantage you can give yourself is knowing exactly what's coming. Surprises cost time, and on this exam time is everything. Here's the honest breakdown.
It's open-book — and that's the trap
Most states administer the journeyman exam through PSI (or Prometric), and it's open-book: you bring your tabbed copy of the NEC and a basic calculator. That sounds easy, but it's the trap. "Open book" means the test is designed assuming you'll look things up — so it's timed tight enough that slow lookups will sink you. People don't fail because they're not smart enough; they fail because they're slow or studied the wrong code edition.
Format and length
Most versions run 80–100 multiple-choice questions with about 3 to 4 hours to finish. Two question types make up almost the entire exam:
- Code-lookup questions (~⅔) — find and apply an NEC rule.
- Calculation questions (~⅓) — conduit fill, box fill, ampacity, motor and load calculations.
Texas, for example, splits its journeyman test into NEC-knowledge questions and a separate calculations section.
The passing score
Most states require roughly 70% to pass. That means on an 80-question exam you can miss around 24 and still pass — so you don't need to be perfect, you need to be fast and consistent on the question types that repeat every single exam.
What's actually tested
The same handful of topics show up over and over: conductor ampacity (Table 310.16), overcurrent protection, box and conduit fill, grounding and bonding, branch circuits and receptacles, services and feeder load calculations, and motors. Master those and you've covered the vast majority of the exam.
How to prepare
Two things win this exam: code-navigation speed and automatic calculations. Drill timed practice questions with the same code book you'll bring, and rehearse full-length mock exams so test day feels like a rerun.
That's exactly what we built Pass Your Electrician Exam to do — a verified NEC question bank where every answer is explained with its code reference, plus calc drills and mock exams. Know the format, drill the patterns, and a first-try pass stops being luck and becomes the expected outcome.
